The Photojournalism Difference
Nothing makes me happier as a photographer than capturing THE moment that forever tells a story. The story of two people in love, family, a teary father giving away his daughter, friendship, or a mother’s embrace as she dances with her son. I love the unplanned, the unexpected, the tears, and the laughter.
This is what sets me apart from other wedding photographers. My photographs evoke a flood of memories and emotions for everyone who was there and are a window into the past for those who were not. With years of experience working for newspapers- capturing moments as they happen in EVERY possible situation- and a degree in photojournalism I have the necessary experience to anticipate & capture split-second moments with beautiful light & composition.– What to Expect –
– Pictures that are easy & fun! (even if you don’t like having your picture taken)
– Help creating a photo timeline & portrait checklist
– No need for a shot list! (I know it by heart but I’ll make notes if you want to do one 🙂
– Wedding pictures that don’t look like everyone else’s and showcase your love & personality
– Two award-winning photographers (if you go with 2 photogs) with photojournalism backgrounds
– Surprises! Always the good kind 😉
– Easy & Fun experience from start to finish (BBB accredited!)
– Last but not least, ALL photos are cropped, color corrected, and tweaked
So have fun! Be yourself! And pretend you don’t have a photographer staring at you! (I make it easy, I promise 😉A professional photographer and photo editor for over 15 years, a professional wedding photographer since 2007, I’m honored to be able to call my career award-winning, both as a journalist and a wedding photographer. In fact, it was my work as a journalist that fashioned my style in weddings. At sporting events, military homecomings and in the quick moments of life I’ve learned to anticipate and to sense that something meaningful — no matter how small it seems at the time — is about to happen. The best moments are often unexpected and you have to be on your toes, even during portrait sessions.
Rather than toot my own horn, please read the testimonials of couples I’ve photographed and about the connections and friendships we’ve forged. Many of my family, newborn, and maternity clients are couples I first photographed on their wedding day and as they attest, I truly care about photographing all the moments that make up each unique story. I care that you and the entire family can relive that moment each time they flip through your album or see the gorgeous aluminum print on your wall.

Voted the Knot’s “Best of Wedding Photographers” in 2010 and 2013 | Wedding Wire’s “Bride’s Choice” and “Couples Choice” Award 2008 – 2017 | Virginia Living Magazine’s “Top Wedding Vendor” 2017 & 2016
What is the Photojournalism Difference?
Knowing how to capture split-second, storytelling moments creatively. We are experienced at everything, from traditional portraits to details to action shots of moments as they happen. We don’t stop the action to change the light or background, we anticipate what is going to happen, prepare for it, position ourselves for the best angles, and capture the important moments as they happen (and have the experience to do this quickly when the unexpected happens ;).
What matters most to us is that our photographs tell your story by capturing your experiences, personalities, and life moments. So our details are more meaningful, group portraits are quick, and portraits have a lot more personality.
Heather was VA Small Newspaper Photographer of the Year 2002 and earned multiple awards from the VNPA, VPA, NPPA, Hearst competition, and both Heather and Rob were accepted & attended the Eddie Adams workshop. Both have been published extensively: Daily Press, St. Petersburg Times, People magazine, Washington Post, America 24/7, Virginia 24/7 and several others. Rob has been runner up for Virginia’s Newspaper Photographer of the Year 2013 & 2014. Heather has earned WeddingWire.com “Couple’s Choice Award” every year since 2008, Virginia Living Magazine’s “Best of Virginia Photographers” 2016 & 2017, and has been published in VOW magazine, The Knot magazine, Hampton Roads Wedding Guide, and several other bridal publications.
Natural,Fun & Storytelling
Real moments & emotions are the main photos we focus on getting so we blend into the background while encouraging everyone to be themselves (and try to forget we are there until the portraits). This doesn’t mean we won’t tell someone they have food in their teeth, but if it’s a funny picture we might shoot it before saying something. A big advantage with our photojournalism style is it allows us to work quickly and clients don’t spend hours smiling for the camera.
Our focus when editing the thousands of photos are flattering angles, natural smiles, unique moments, and great light. So even during a portrait session we want you to be yourself and we will edit out the ones with your eyes closed 😉 Laugh, stick your tongue out, just be yourself and as long as you are having fun the great pictures will happen (and I will make sure you look great ;).
What to Expect
And we carry backup equipment and backups for our backups. We ask questions before your wedding day, sometimes a lot of questions, to get to know you, your style, and the photos you love. We offer help in planning the flow of your day, take away the stress of having your picture taken, always have a Plan B, and go to great lengths to capture the story of YOUR day and what makes it unique & wonderful. Whether the centerpieces are handmade, everyone dances (or talks) the whole night, or you make “that” face, we will photograph it all.
Heather likes to meet over coffee to get to know each couple beforehand but a phone call, Skype, or email can work too when planning from a distance. Finding the perfect photographer can be stressful, it’s a big decision and we don’t want to rush anyone, so we try to be available all the time, offer advice and support whenever we are asked, and make the whole experience better for everyone.
