Photographer FAQ

Who will be the photographer for our wedding or event?

Heather. Rob still works full time at the newspaper so he has very limited availability and if you are interested in having two photographers it may be Rob or it may be one of a select few Heather hires to work with her because they have newspaper & wedding photojournalism experience as well. They are trained professionals as well (not just a friend who has a camera) and can also help out if something happens to Heather or Rob (which hasn't happened yet, knock-on-wood;)

What is different about Wedding Photojournalism?

Real moments. Real emotions. Natural beauty. We are visual storytellers. We don't pose or fake photographs but instead capture the real moments, emotions, and details using composition and light to tell the story as it unfolds. By remaining a witness to the natural flow of events, we can capture genuine smiles, tears, personalities, and story of your day. Unlike traditional wedding photographers, we do not direct you at any time other than during the portraits and even then we watch for the moments between photos that are often better because you are more relaxed and less worried about posing for the camera. Your wedding day is a momentous day, and we want to capture every moment and detail. This is also the reason why our packages start with 8 hours of coverage, because in order to get the preparation through the important events at the reception we need at least that much time so you don't feel rushed to cut the cake or throw the bouquet.

How many photos do you take? Can we print from the DVD?

We take about 2000 photos and then edit them down to the best 400 - 800 which we put on the Gold DVD or USB that is included with every package (in the interest of you being able to share your photos with future generations we use Archival Gold DVDs that are tested to last at least 100 years). You will get a Permission to Print letter to make it easy to print from the DVD or USB for yourself and your family, the only thing you can't do is sell our photos or give them to someone else to sell.

Do you have a backup person and equipment?

Yes, although we've never needed it ( knock-on-wood :). We always have at least 2-3 cameras with us at all times and have a couple professional photographers we have worked with that can cover for us if something were to happen.

Will you take the traditional group photos and posed portraits of the bridal couple?

Yes, we always take the traditional group photos and posed portraits because we recognize this is a family gathering and the best opportunity for most couples to get photos of their families.

Do you shoot color and B&W?

We shoot all digital with professional digital cameras so everything is shot in color and on the website, www.pictage.com, for viewing and ordering and you can change any photo to B&W or Sepia. If you have a preference towards B&W or want a few special effects like having the photo B&W with only the bouquet in color just let us know and we're happy to do some of that for you. If you want more than a few done afterwards or more complicated manipulation (like taking out objects in the background) this can also be done for an hourly rate.

Can I own the copyright to the photos?

You don't need the copyright to your photos in order to make prints, only to sell them. As the creator of your wedding photographs, we retain the copyright so we can control where the photos appear and how they are used. We give every couple the permission to make prints for their own personal use so and there is no need for us to give away the copyright.
