Virginia Air & Space Center Wedding Heather Hughes Photography

On December 28, Emily and Will were married in a lovely ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hampton, VA and had their reception at the Virginia Air and Space Center. This was a beautiful winter wedding, and it I was so happy to be their wedding photographer.

Emily & Will’s Virginia Air and Space Center Wedding

Emily is an elementary school teacher with a huge heart (she spent time in the Peace Corps) and Will is practically a genius with his extensive knowledge of history. In fact, they bonded over their shared love of history. Will and Emily continue to visit historic sites even on their honeymoon and spent a long weekend in Charleston, SC for New Year’s before heading back to work! For a late December Hampton wedding, the weather was GORGEOUS. We were lucky enough to have temperatures right around 60 degrees and the sun shining.

The wedding ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal Church is a historic Hampton church and was Will’s while growing up. Plus, we discovered he had been neighbors with my photography assistant, Caroline growing up! Truly a small world. One of my favorite moments was the first look with Emily & her dad before the ceremony – they were both so happy and it clearly helped Emily relax before walking down the aisle.

Since Will and Emily’s winter wedding day was just after Christmas, the church was still beautifully decorated for the holidays. The decorations beautifully complemented Emily’s wedding colors. I loved the way the greenery and rich reds from the poinsettias offered a rich backdrop for their wedding portraits.

Hampton Wedding Photography

I’ve visited the Virginia Air & Space Center in Hampton many times, but this was my first wedding there and I just had to work in some of the unique features into their portraits. The Hampton Carousel was closed, so we used the mural and planes as a backdrop for truly unique wedding portraits.

The reception was more social than dance party as they caught up with friends & family — and everyone enjoyed the live band. It was a wonderful wedding day to celebrate this wonderful couple. I’m so happy I was there to share in their day and I wish them many years of happiness and historic tours!
